How old should my child be before starting music lessons?
This is a question I get a lot as a music teacher and small business owner. To me the real answer is there is no right age for when your child should start music lessons. Whenever your child expresses musical interest and a desire to learn, that is the best time. That means they already have a preconceived interest in the instrument of choice and in turn will result in a happier and more relaxed learning environment which will make weekly practice enjoyable and not a chore.
There is exception to the rule though, I've had kids who maybe weren't necessarily interested in taking music lessons at first but were hooked by the end of their first class! So maybe the overall truth is, there never is a perfect age to start classes. It will all depend on the individual student themselves.
So where do I go from here? If your child is showing interest then definitely enroll them in a few classes or give a trial lesson a go and see if they like it. If your child isn't showing direct interest at first still give them a chance to explore the world of music! It's such a wonderful life skill that has so many therapeutic benefits and helps build great characteristics such as confidence and hard work ethic.
